What exactly is a domain name?

A domain name is simply the unique name that identifies a website on the web. Domain names mean that we can find website with a name rather than having to remember server numbers. Our domain is webfactore.co.uk. Obviously your domain name is a very important element to consider when setting up your website, and like most decisions when running a business, deciding on which name to choose can be a difficult decision.

Choose a Top level domain or TDL

A top level domain name is basically the bit that comes after your name in your web address. Which one you choose will depend on many factors.

The most popular of the top level domain names in the UK are .com and .co.uk. Due to their demand, competition for them is high and you may find it tough getting the exact name that you had in mind. You may have to be flexible or creative with your name to get a web address which is not already taken.

If you only want to register one domain name, if both are available then the general rule of thumb goes:

.com - If you are an international business with an international audience.
.co.uk - If you are more UK based or your audience is mostly in the UK.

If both are available it is generally recommended that you get both, this way you are covered and won't get confused with anyone who might register the other.

Other alternatives:

So what if you can't obtain either of the above? Don't panic, it's not the end of the world and there are other avenues to explore.

Try using an alternative name or a different spelling or maybe try something that is related to what it is your business does e.g. www.wemakewebsites.com - just think outside the box a little. Sometimes using hyphens between words can help, but remember again that if there is scope for people to get confused, best steer away.

The other option is, consider the other TDLs such as - .net, .co, .org etc although you are more likely to find your name available, we generally recommend sticking to the big two The most important thing to consider in your domain name is to have something that is easy to remember and even more so, easy to type. Rule out anything long winded or with a spelling that people might get confused with. Did someone say Webfactore, oops!
