4 simple ways to increase your average order value

In this blog we look at four different ways you can boost your ecommerce sales, by using some simple tools that are available to you in the website manager.

What is your average order value?

Your average order value (AOV) is an important metric to keep track of. The AOV is the average amount a customer spends when making an order on your website. You can work your average order value with this simple equation:

total revenue ÷ number of orders = AOV

How can I increase my average order value?

There are a few different methods you can use to increase your average order value. For example, you could consider cross promotions, volume discounts, free shipping or even payment plans. Below we will look at these in more detail and tell you how you can incorporate them into your website.

1. Cross promotions

Cross promotions allow you to promote items that are related to the product a customer is viewing. For example, if a customer is looking at a packet of pens on your website, your cross promotion could offer them a notepad, correction fluid or even a more expensive pen that they might not have seen.

Cross promotions are usually seen underneath a product and often have headings such as 'You might also like...' or 'Frequently bought together'. This is a great way to upsell to your customers and improve your average order value (AOV).

Your website editor gives you the ability to add cross promotions to any of your products. This gives you the ability to fine tune the cross promotions for each product to ensure they are useful/related to the product the customer is looking at.

2. Volume discounts

Volume discounts reward your customers for purchasing large quantities of the same product. For example, a hardware store might offer volume discounts on products such as screws or nails. The more of these products the customer purchases, the larger the discount they receive. This can help increase your average order value as it incentivises the customer to place larger orders.

3. Free delivery on orders over X

Another great way to increase your average order value is to offer free delivery on orders that are over a specific value. This can encourage customers to make additional purchases as they may increase their order value to make the most of the free delivery.

However, if you intend to offer free delivery make sure your customers know about the offer. To promote this, you could send out an email to your customer base or even add a promotional banner to the homepage of your website.

You can add new banners to your website using the website editor or you can get one of our designers to create one for you for a small fee.

4. Payment plans

Payment plans are another way you can increase your website's average order value. Payment plans enable customers to make a larger purchase by allowing them to spread the cost over a set period.

We have recently added Klarna to our webshop payment options. This now means you can give your customers this option! You can learn more about Klarna in our blog here. We also offer integration with Stripe where you can offer additional payment plan options.
