Most people will just have a single central website but sometimes it can be beneficial to have more than one site for the same business. Why would you want to do this and what are the advantages of splitting things up?
Reason 1: Targeting multiple locations:
Consider where you want your website to target. Maybe you want to focus nationally and internationally, or perhaps you wanted to be targeting two or more specific areas, such as London and Cardiff.
A site focusing on one area will usually perform better than one targeting multiple locations. Search engines will place a higher value on targeted websites. For example, if you were to search on Google, “gardener, Cardiff,” then Google will place higher value on the website’s targeting Cardiff and mention Cardiff throughout the website relative to one that only mentions Cardiff on a single line or page. This also rings true for a person looking at your site. Consumers tend to place a higher value to products and services located closer to them.
So if your business is one that looks to cover more than one area splitting your site could be a good option for you to increase your online success.
Reason 2: Targeting multiple audiences:
Another reason you may want to consider having multiple sites is if you are trying to target varied audiences’. To have an effective website you should try to match your website’s content to the audience you are targeting. It can be hard to do this on one site and therefore creating multiple targeted sites might be a good idea.
Reason 3: Specialised products or services:
You might find that you have specialised products or a particular range you’d like to give more focus to on your website. Providing a second site customised towards the sale of the product will give it far more marketing opportunity. It will also do your SEO some good as you can link back to your main site too. This works for services in the same way. If you’re business is launching a new service or approaching a new sector then a dedicated site will help you direct customers specifically after that towards you, once again you can link them back to your main site as well.
So there are a few examples of how splitting your site could improve your search engine optimisation and your traffic. For many of you will only ever need to operate from one site, but if you think you fall into any of the above examples, it’s always a good idea to talk with your web designer to decide on the route that is best for you.
