The importance of calls to action and where to place them
23rd September 2026
When someone visits your website, what do you want them to do? Do you want them to buy a product, sign up for a newsletter, or get in touch for a quote? If you want to turn your website visitors into actual customers, you’ll need to guide them by the hand. This is where a crucial web design feature comes in: the call to action.
In this blog, we’ll explain what a call to action is, why it's important and the most effective ways to use it.
What is a call to action and why are they important?
A call to action, or often referred to as a CTA, is simply a prompt on your website that tells your user what to do next. Usually, it looks like a clickable button or a bold link with wording like:
- “Get a Free Quote”
- “Buy Now”
- “Contact Us Today”
- “Sign Up for Our Newsletter”
A website without a call to action is like a shop with no checkout or staff members to assist you. People might browse your shelves, but they will likely walk out empty-handed simply because they don't know how to complete a purchase.
CTAs are important because they remove the guesswork. They give your visitors clear direction, reducing hesitation, and directly boosting your sales or enquiries. Without them, even the most beautifully designed website will struggle to get results.
The best places to put your calls to action
Having a great call to action is only half the battle; where you put it on the page matters just as much. If it’s hidden away, people won’t see it. Here are the best spots to place your CTAs:
1. At the top of your homepage (The "Hero" section)
The first thing people see when they land on your website is the top banner area (before they start scrolling down). This is best area to place a call to action. Putting a clear CTA here, such as “View Our Services” or “Get a Free Quote”, catches immediate attention before the visitor even reads the rest of the page.
2. At the end of your content or blog posts
If someone has read all the way down a page or finished reading one of your blog articles, it means they are interested in what you have to say. Don't let that engagement go to waste. Capitalise on their interest by placing a relevant CTA right at the bottom, like “Ready to get started? Get in touch with our team.”
3. Floating or sticky headers/menus
As visitors scroll further down long pages, the top menu often disappears out of sight. Having a "sticky" header that stays put at the top of the screen, featuring a permanent button like “Call Now” or “Get a Quote”, ensures that no matter where the user is on the page, taking the next step is only ever a single click away.
4. Near your products or services
If you are explaining a specific service or displaying a product, put the CTA right next to it. If a customer reads about an amazing service you offer, they shouldn't have to scroll back up or hunt through a menu to buy it or ask about it. Put the button “Order Now” or “Enquire Today” right where their interest is.
Summary
A website without clear direction is a missed opportunity. Calls to action are the simple yet powerful signposts that guide your visitors from just "looking around" to becoming loyal customers. By placing them thoughtfully at the top of your pages, next to your products, and at the end of your content, you make it as easy as possible for people to do business with you.
